Switching Nikon to Canon...

Have any of you done this? or vice Versa?

I am getting really pissed off with the peachy skin tones from my D300, and am considering changing over to canon, after using a mates a couple of times, It just felt more intuitive, and better in general.

I am well aware that i am a long way down the road, with approx £3k worth of gear, and at the time, testing it all worked fine. Just using it day to day, i'm questioning it. This is no way me moaning that my gear affects my photography etc etc, it is just a consideration, that I am looking into swapping brands. ( I really don't care what the sticker is, I just want the best tool for me and for the job)

Any thoughts?

The D300 does have an interesting colour setup in default mode, I've found it on out of the box hue/saturation and AWB when shooting jpeg in Camera Standard the reds are all over the place. I'm sure I remember Simpo Two saying something about it as well and sticking with a D200.

I fixed my problem shooting RAW and mostly manual then adjusting reds2 in post (either action or LR template)

If you're going down the Canon route, I was very very impressed with the 5dMk2, I think that or the 1D would be the only ones I'd be bothered about upgrading to

Also, found half stop ETTR works well with many lenses

I have searched a lot about the reds Andy, and it seems to be a really common issue. Ive had the camera a few years, and whilst it is still in good nick, you know what its like wanting more toys, rather than needing new tools urgently to do the job

The one i was testing with a mate was a 5d mkII and it was pretty impressive. He has however spent an arm and a leg on lenses, and all the gear for it.

I found the same with the D700; wondered if it was down to the chip being CMOS and not CCD. Certainly not nice with skin tones in JPG; sadly D300/D700 NEFs weren't compatible with the version of C1 Pro I use. I shot a wedding with a D300 and used LR2 to process, and it was 'OK' but still not quite right - though whether this was the camera or the software being different I don't know. Whilst LR2 is compatible with D300/D700 NEFs, my brain isn't compatible with LR2 so I went back to what worked best.

Preaching to the converted there, I bought a D700

Out the box the d300 and d700 are a little bit red sensitive. Negligible really but I've sorted it shooting raw (nef) and turning off all the in - camera processing when adding jpeg's (not that it matters shooting raw). Mostly i shoot in a studio so wb is important and have a colour calibration panel for critical work (fashion).Both my D300s and D700 are fine and colour matched. Anyway, Nikon kit is awesome and the tonal graduation / quality of the D700 in particular. Most problems I've seen on mates cameras are down to settings rather than any inherent problem. I've never seen the need to switch.

From comparisons and chat I've seen canons colours especialy for skin tones seem to be a lot better, not sure why.

7D is the equivelant for a D300 but if your switching and its people you shoot most then prehaps a 5D2?
