What is the view on camera insurance on here? I'm not sure if my home insurance covers it at the moment as I'd also like coverage when I'm on my travels.

Any views or favorites?

Your home insurance will cover theft from the home, mine is limited to individual items no more expensive that £1500, unless specified as an individual item. Beware though, as there will be a limit to what they will pay out for camera equipment.Tell them about EVERYTHING you have of value.

Camera insurance is certainly worth it, especially for being out and about.

I have a pro policy with Glover and Howe, including public and professional liability. I've never had to make a really big claim, only ever for dropped or damaged gear, but they've always been quick and efficient. Gear is covered on a new for old basis.

Be very very cautious with home insurance, I had a D90, D60 and a couple of lenses stolen back in June, insurance was with a large supermarket begining with S and an absolute 100% waste of money frown

I use http://www.photoguard.co.uk/ they are not the cheapest and I have never made a claim but the peace of mind is worth it IMO.

Conversely, I broke my 40D and had a 60D delivered within 7 days by Lloyds TSB / Aviva.

Think I pay slightly more than that with a company whose logo is a large X, but it's new for old cover and covers theft, accidental damage, etc., both here and overseas. I have around £5k worth of kit covered.

Thanks for the links. I'll have a look when I get home.

Out of interest how do you value your kit? On its new price or used price? For example, what should I value my 5d at? It's new, used or the replacement price (ie 5d MK2)?

I spoke to someone when I got my camera and wanted to insure it, and they basically said that as long as I had receipts they would be able to pay out in the event of a claim.

I can only suggest speaking to your insurance company to see what their views are on insuring second-hand items such as bodies or lenses.

It is through Homeinsure.co.uk but underwritten by Paragon Red.

Just checked on my home insurance, seems I was sensible enough to put a clause in there about my camera gear. Well done me smile

Any recommendations for full world-wide cover, or are the above-listed exactly that?

I've often wondered how an insurance company would handle two items being lost/stolen /damaged that are individually lower value than their limit but when connected together a la SLR and Lens are over it. Tell you to sling your hook I expect.

Glover and Howe do full world-wide cover, but their UK-only policies are cheaper and include a certain amount of worldwide cover too, so depending on how often / long you are away it might be enough.

Thanks, I'm in NZ for five weeks shortly so I will have a look at their policies.

My home insurer covers the body and lenses separately. I asked specifically: not that my kit is worth umpteen thousands, but the point of having insurance is to be covered!
