Reducing File Size

I have bought a Canon 550D i have taken some shots and uploaded to my PC they are rather large for emailing.
What would be the ideal resoulutoin for emailing purposes i don't want to lose the quality of the images.
Curent set up 8M 3456 X 2304 that is too big?
Only got camera yesterday.

I tend to go 800px on longest side, usually works out around 350'ishk per image

It's too big because I assume you want people to see it on their monitors without the computer resizing.

I resize to 970 pixels wide as 99% of people will see that as I intend them to.

It also reduces file size to about 300k, which is ok - even for those poor sods on dial up.

Personally for all web use I go to 700px long side and 96 dpi. makes around 300kb per image then. Plenty small enough for emails etc.

But remember not to overwrite the originals!

How do you do that options are M/S/L smallest being 2592 x 1728 or do i use software?

You need to use software to reduce to a size small enough for easy emailing. The software that came with the camera will do it. I'd recommend shooting at the largest size and best quality because memory these days is dirt cheap and, when you take that fantastic shot that you want to print out A3 sized, you'll be glad you did.

Thanks for that i was'nt going to use the software i usally put the SD card in the computer and run from there,Can't do that it now seems.
The camera is great i took a photo of a car door mirror on my desk which happened to have a reflection of a car in it,played with the camera a bit and what a shot.
Turned it upside down for better viewing if you view it's normal size 8MP you can see wrinkles on the paper.
As a novice it blew me away.

You can still use the Zoombrowser software if you take the card out.

You get a few distinct facilities - starting with how you want to manage and store the downloads through to thre initiall assessment of what you want to keep and delete, then which are the best shots in your opinion and then on to minor tweaking (cropping out bits you don't want, enhancing, resizing and sending to people or places) through to full edit capabilites and, if you have a printer, printing.

I have not played with Zoombrowser for a while but it is quite powerful and capable and so a good starting point since it comes with the camera.

Most dSLR images benefit from some tweaking, though you may then decide to tweak the in-cmaera settings to your preferences. Or not ... you may decide you want to take full external control and use a barely processed image from the camera as the basis for your own efforts in Zoombrowser or some other editing tool.
