Hi Everyone,

Looking for some help.

The camera has stopped connection with the laptop. I have reloaded the Canon software. Tried to update the driver in device manager, all this did was to loose the name Canon 500D and replace it with digital still camera.

Now when I try to connect I get the message device driver software was not properly installed.

Any ideas.

<< I use a PC for photography and regularly have similar problems with Nikon / PC connectivity.

Currently my Nikon NX software crashes the PC when my Nikon is connected. How hard can it be?!!

I also use a Mac for music and never have a sniff of a problem

Not sure on Canon's but on Nikon bodies you can set USB to either mass storage or PTP mode. Try setting it to the opposite of what it's set to now.

I have never used a direct connection, always a card reader and I don't recall ever having any problems with any camera.

So my suggestion is to buy a card reader and bypass the PC/camera link entirely.

HC, it's just what PCs do. Don't get sucked in to fighting it ....

Mate of mine (techie bloke who really does know what he's doing) told me today that an update this week for his Windows 7 installation had managed to blow away the dual monitor set up on his graphics card but only once Windows was fully loaded. Whilst loading it knew there were 2 monitors. Loaded it only recognised one.

My guess is that something has changed and that, since Canon drivers have never seemed very resilient to me, screwed your connectivity.

I too usually prefer to try to understand what is going on - but gave up long ago with Windows.

Sorry I can't be more positive for you.

At some stage he will need to connect the camera to the computer, even if it's only to update the camera software.

Firmware updates can be run from the memory card as I recall. However they are infrequent and rarely seem to do much other than correct spelling errors in non-english languages so I would not see that as a big deal.

If using the Remote control software regularly it could be a problem but HC has not specifically mentioned that. There are a couple of applications that would then use the USB cable.

Might be worth checking the Canon web site for updates although running the updates requires a prior installation iirc.

Has anything else changed on the PC?

Are there any errors showing on the list of devices?

I had a similar problem with my 40D a few months ago. I tried everything including updating the Canon software etc.

Eventually I read elsewhere about uninstalling all your USB devices on the PC from the device manager window (they reconnect when you reboot). This did the trick and it connected just fine after that.

You need to uninstall the canon software - switch off the pc
Switch PC back on then re-install the latest Canon software, in my case I've had to do this 5 times ie. each time I buy a new Canon I own:-
G7-400d-40d-50d-G9 and finally 7d
the software that comes with the 7d recognises all the older camerasbiggrin
However if I tried to load the latest 7d software with the 50d software already installed[for example] I'd get the problem the OP mentions
Hope this helps

If the issue is with the computer simply choose a restore point of when it was working OK and the settings will go back to what they were. Takes 5 minutes and you don't lose any data but any software/updates installed since that time will disappear.

It is under control panel/recovery in Win7 and Accessories/system tools in XP if I remember rightly.
