must visit places in Scotland?

Having never been to Scotland now's my chance in the coming weeks, 1 week up there can't wait, just wondering where's best to go? I probably can't go wrong with any of it having trawled flickr and CetCarters photos

I can only really comment on the Highlands. West is best. If you start at Glasgow, drive past Loch Lomond, through Glencoe then Fort William, Spean Bridge, Lochcarron, Applecross, Torridon, Then stick to the coast road all the way through Gairloch, Ullapool, LochInver, Kylescu and up to Durness - you'll see the best scenery, and experience most of the best roads.

Mull in the Inner Hebrides is great, south and north Skye are charming, Harris and Barra in the Outer Hebrides are stunning (but only when it's sunny).

For places to stay half way up the coast route check out: http://www.Torridon.org

Give a shout if you need any more help. The roads north of Spean Bridge are now almost completely empty and will remain so until Easter.

ETA : If you are flying to Inverness and car hiring, then head for Fort Augustus (by Loch Ness), check out Glen Coe (a MUST see) and then pick up the above coastal route.

GetCarter has summed it up pretty perfectly there, if your in Glen Coe dont forget to pop down Glen Etive down to Loch Etive some good scenes down there.



And Torridon is unmissable, absolutely love the place.



I always think these areas look much better in Autumn and winter and make regular trips then.

Couple more of Rannoch Moor/Glen Coe last october.

yep been checking as im heading that way this weekend, going north from inverness on sunday then staying in gairloch on sunday night, I want to do the Applecross road again but dont think the missus is too keen!

In my humble opinion the very best section of the roads described is from Gairloch to Ullapool.
