I'm thinking about treating myself to a new "point and shoot" but would like something that offers a bit more versatility than the current Ixus 70.

Years ago I bought a 300D and a couple of lenses which I got a great deal of pleasure from using. The sheer bulk of the camera and associated kit eventually got the better of me and I bought the Ixus as something to keep in my pocket at all times. For this it has been great and the picture quality still seems good today.

Technology seems to have moved on a fair bit since the Ixus70 was released so I want to update things a little. With a pending holiday to Morocco and Duty free shopping on the way it seems like a fairly sensible tome to get something new.

I know very little about what's available at the moment so am looking for some guidance here. A friend has just bought the Sony Nex-5 which sounds nice, but still a bit too bulky for me.

Any suggestions for something that meets the following:
- Compact ('Ultra' compact even?)
- Good optical zoom (the Ixus only has a 3x optical zoom, more here would be appreciated)
- low shutter lag time.
- Some range of manual controls e.g. Aperture priority.
- Video would be nice, not essential though.
- Budget of say £300-400?

Panasonic Lumix TZ10

Not as compact as the canon but you get a load more features for the extra bulk.

Although im not sure if it has manual controls to the extend your looking for.

Thanks guys, just had a little read up on that one and like the sound of it.

Any opinions on the Sony DSC-HX5?

Moose.

A Canon S95 should fit the bill. Very pocketable and offers full manual control. I've been very happy with my S90 (until someone stole it!).
