On the isle of eigg at the moment. Turned away to sneeze momentarily only for a rogue wave to chuck my 5d and lens into the sea.

It was only in for a second but its fked.

Feel like chucking the whole photography thing in right now.

Don't have insurance and have no money to get it repaired.

Oh censored really sorry to hear this John. Isn’t the 5D weather sealed? A friend of mine dunked theirs but stuck it in the airing cupboard and it dried out, and worked. Worth a try.

Cheers guys,

Will try house insurance when I get home. By the time i get home it will be over 24 hours since it got dunked so the damage will no doubt be done.

One of the 5dmk2s worst features is its lack of weather resistance.

Very low right now

My home/contents paid out on my D80 when I broke it trying to clean it. The insurers were going to replace with another camera like for like, but their preferred place (WHE) didnt have stock so they sent me cash equivalent, cheque arrived within a week

In the meantime, suggest a cheap film SLR. Works for me but dont know whether it'd be your thing.

Spoke to direct line - they will cover any claim up to 2000.00. Feel a little better now.

The whole reason for this trip was to shoot for a magazine, got about 3 shots under harsh light in mid afternoon.

O, and there is a sheep that won't shut up and I am in the mood to boot it up the arse!

Oh cock, as James May would say.

Good to know the insurance will cover most of it. I've smashed the screen on my laptop by dropping it this week, must be something in the air.

It would be a great loss if you stopped taking photos John.

Sorry that you've had this happen!

I broke my 350d on holiday back in June (dropped it about 20ft) and despite getting several estimates my travel insurers are being really irritating about the claim. It's not worth anywhere near as much as the 5D but I haven't been able to take a photo since June - and that's SO annoying!

Well, my 5 month old Canon S90 was stolen from me last week (along with my cellphone and a bit of cash) right before I went on holiday. Thus leaving me with my rather less than brilliant backup Olympus. And I don't have insurance due to my location and constant travelling frown

Aw, man, feel for you. Hope the insurance covers you and that you're not too far out of pocket or inconvenienced - would indeed be a shame to lose you and your images.

When you're back up and running, try Aaduki for insurance, there's been a couple of threads on here with others and the Q often pops up on TalkPhotography too.

Sorry to hear that John. At least you're covered. If you need a Camera in the meantime, I have one you can borrow (though might not have the lenses you need... plus it's Nikon... but just shout if you want it).

That is unlucky John but not worth stopping photography. Put it down to experience and next time, have the strap round your neck, the worse thing that could happen in the case of a sneeze is that it would swing up and smash you in the face.

Could be time to try a 7d and pocket the change. who needs full frame anyway??

Discovered how well a 5D2, battery pack and 24-70 bounce in Canada last week frown

Was climbing some rocks and slipped and managed to throw it a few feet at the rocks from my shoulder where it was slung. A bit sickening to see (and hear) but apart from a couple of scrapes on the body and battery pack all seems well.

sorry to hear it fella! I know it is no consolation but the 550d is much better IQ than the old 5d just without full frame, a bargain at 5 to 600 quid

eta just saw its an mk2, i know its of no solice to you right now but the 550 does make a good cheap alternate on a par iq wise

Thank you for all your very kind comments and offers of cameras. I'm sure I will get something sorted.

I have been thinking more about the 7d however think I would miss the full frame come landscape time

Doesn't help, but having had my new 5D MKII delivered yesterday, I feel your pain!

You probably also didn't want to know that wink

Sorry to hear that John. Very bad luck! A friend of mine who's a videographer was chatting to a photographer at a wedding recently. He was informed that the 550d is as good as the 7d and not far off the 5d for most intents and purposes. He was impressed enough by the results to cancel his 5d order and saved a bucket by ordering a 550. He got a really good deal on Amazon to include an 85-200 lens (? - my memory may be playing tricks) along with kit 18-55 IS and body for <£700. Hope this aids your mood recuperation?!
