I had an interesting e-mail recently, with a request to use one of my photographs in a publication.

It is for a 7th edition book about wine and will be published in Brazil only with a first batch print of 5000 copies. If demand is there then more prints will go ahead.

They have a desire to have better photos and found mine which I used on my blog with a Google image search (I guess all that image optimising has paid off...)

I've not been in this situation so far, so am not sure how to go about doing this, Should I be asking for credit/ name mentioned, cash, or both?

I always ask for cash and mention that there will be a big reduction if they credit - with my domain name.

This usually works.

I don't overcharge, as I've found people do come back for more if you are not taking the pi55.

What price would you give for a small publication like the one I mentioned? I was thinking £50 as a price I pulled out of thin air. Maybe £100 without discount or 50% discount (to the £50) if I get credit.

That's the most difficult question ever asked here. There are guidelines (there is a thread on here somewhere), but utimately and only in my humble opinion, you need to find a price that you are happy with.

I generally work on who it's for. If I like them (or Charity), I do it for sod all. If I know they can afford it, I'll price high. But I don't rely on photography to pay my mortgage, and many do, so pricing too low will hurt the breed!

The temptation is to *always* price too low. Most publications are used to paying for photos, so won't cringe if you ask a decent amount. They have a budget they need to spend.

Thanks for input, much appreciated. I went for the £100 price and will play it by ear to see what comes of it.

This might give you a rough idea. As mentioned above, they do tend to come back if you don't charge a ridiculous amount.

Thanks for the link, that's a handy reference, I think £100 that I quoted sounds reasonable after seeing that.
