Hello there,

I am looking to buy a new camera for going on holiday with. I have been doing a fair bit of reserch on the internet lately and have just ended up confusing myself slightly and upping the budget rolleyes.

So I thought I would ask the PH massive for their knowledge.

I started looking at high end compact cameras like the Panasonic Lumix TZ8 and TZ10 (TZ10 ruled out due to GPS function).
Then moved onto looking at bridge cameras, such as the Panasonic Lumix FZ45 and FZ100, and the Nikon P100, and the other offerings from the other manufacturers. The fujufilms seem to get very good reviews although I always had them down as rather low rent for some reason.

I was always under the impression that if you had a good lens, e.g Leica or karl Zeis then you couldn't go far wrong, but not so sure if these are the best available now.

So basically I have got myself all in a pickle!

The budget is ~£300, preferably less but could stretch for a really good camera.

I like the idea of being able to play with the various settings, appeture speed and stuff wink, as I think this will encourage me to learn more about these things and hopefully take better photos.

I also like having a large zoom as a lot of the pics I will be taking will be from a train, or of monuments, and possibly stuff that I shouldn't be taking pics of.

So any help is very welcome,
Yours confused of Scotland

Thanks for that link. I think I have narrowed it down to a couple of choices now.
In order of preference:
1. Panasonic Lumix FZ45
2. Nikon P100

I am leaning towards the Panasonic at the moment due to its Leica lens and the fact that it has a threaded lens so I can put a UV or polarising filter on it if I wish to in the future.

Any comments from anyone? Its a lot of money for me so I don't want to buy a camera that is a bit 'meh'.

I had a breif look at the DSLRs but that way skintness lies, and also I don't want to be carrying around various lenses. Plus I think something like that would just be too good for me really.

The panasonic is sitting in my Amazon basket whilst I fanny about a bit more.

Any feedback?
Cheers

Well assuming you don't want to take the 'I'll start with this and build up a collection of lenses' route, then I'd say that was a damn fine choice for your needs. (BTW If you want to start it as a long term hobby then you should look at Canon or Nikon DSLRs - but they are bigger, heavier and lenses are a money pit.)

I'd get into a shop and hold one in your hands, it'll give you an idea of weight, size, and whether the buttons end up comfortably under your fingers. It does look very good though and as you say... good quality optics.

No I think going down the DSLR route will just be too much money, also I wouldn't have a clue about the lenses and what one to use in what situation and stuff like that. Although perhaps far in the future this might be something I could spend money on.

This seems like a good camera to help me learn a bit about how to set up the exposure, ISO, and stuff (can you tell I am a novice wink ) without spending huge amounts of money on a mediocre camera body and lenses. Also cos it has a threaded lens I can get various extensions for it if I want to in the future.

Looking forward to getting stuck into it when I get home! Thats going to be a nice (expensive) package waiting for me!
