photo scanners - best buy?

im after a bit of advice,
i have a huge box of old photos, negatives and single slides (the ones in the little card squares)
id like to be able to scan them so they can be viewed.
does anyone have any advice to the sort of scanning machine i would need to buy to make this a fairly fast process?
the is such a range availible and im totally ignorant as to any features that will be useful - i dont need to be able to alter the photos - i just want to turn them into digital 'moderns'.
an ideal machine will be something i can use for a couple of hours a night - if the square slides are a problem, i will come back to them later and just buy a machine that does photos and strips of negatives
it is a 'pistonheads' request - these photos are basically the last 50 years of car ownership of our family - theres tons on b&w pictures of 1930's cars taken in the mid to late 1960's, photos taken at riley shows, vscc race meets, scrapyards, abroad, interesting 1930's cars parked on the side of the road etc etc
