And update the prices too !!!!!

Warehouse Express are listing the new 300 f2.8IS @ £7500, with a very (un)reasonable £11,500 for the new 400 f2.8IS. rofl

hehe Thats crazy money. Surely they will drop sharpley in a few months when they stop being "new". Still, that puts the 400mm 2.8 at £1500 more then the 800mm 5.6 spin

400/2.8 has had a massive amount of weight shaved off it! down to 3.8kgs now.

Quite intrested in the 70-300L.

Its a bit of a curious one that, no doubt the USM addition is welcome, I'll be interested to know how well it'll stack up against the current 70-300 on IQ.

And the 70-300 DO which is a few hundred cheaper at list price, though lacks the weather sealing and tripod mount ability and, of course, has older IS and USM technology.

Very interested how they intend to make the 400 F2,8 IS any better, it's already the Dogz bks, and out resolves all current Canon bodiesconfused
What's 1.5kgs less when you're still humping 3.8 kgs aroundbiggrin
Hope the 70-300 justifies the 'L' designation - seriously doubt it though

MTF sugests its sharper than the 70-200f4IS at the wide end and a touch poorer at the long end, and has better bokeh...

Rob,

Can you provide some insight into what these graphs are showing?

I've not looked at any of these for a while and I never was sure what the various lines really meant - without a legend it's all a bite vague.

A link to the source might do it ..... depending on how much the source assumes one understands!

the higher up the chart the 10 LP/mm line is (the thick lines), the higher the contrast reproduction capability of the lens will be.

— the higher up the chart the 30 LP/mm line is (the thin lines), the higher the resolving power and thus subjective sharpness of the lens will be.

— keep in mind that the black lines show the lens wide open while the blue lines show the lens stopped down to f/8, so the closer these sets of lines are to each other the better the performance of the lens when used wide open. The very best lenses will have the black and the blue lines close together.

— generally speaking a lens whose thick lines (10 LP/mm) are above .8 on the chart should be regarded as having excellent image quality. Above .6 is regarded as "satisfactory". Below .6 is, well, below.
