Looking to buy several digital camcorders for a large project. Video equipment is new to me so informed input appreciated.

Must have external mic jack (sound quality is important) and removable media (so they can be used continuously). Anyone have any experience/ recommendations for particular models? Is a budget of £250/ per unit doable - initial research suggests the mic jack will be a stumbling point at this price range?

you might struggle to find a camcorder with an external mic jack at that price.

I'd suggest doing it the old fashioned way- record audio separately, and sync it it post. Not that hard- even easier with software like pluraleyes. As long as the camcorder is recording some kind of audio, pluraleyes analyses sound from external recorder with sound from the camera and auto syncs it up. It works as a plugin for final cut or premiere.

As for an external recorder- 'edirol' make some reasonably inexpensive field recorders, as do 'zoom'. Some come with mini jack style mic input, the more pro ones with XLR inputs.

ive used this little number a few times: http://www.studiospares.com/recorders-portable/edi...
, records to SD card. Fit a large enough card and it'll record all day. Think i had it hooked to some kind of Sony mic, but cant remember what model.

My old man uses one of these: http://www.studiospares.com/recorders-portable/zoo... It has XLR inputs so can be used with a wide variety of mic's. Also has built in mic's that are pretty good to be honest.

If audio is quite important to your project, get your mic as close as possible- advantage of an external recorder is you can set it up close to subject, but you dont have to trail XLR's all over the place to get the audio back to camera.

Out of curiosity, whats your project?
