My trusty Sony Handycam thingy has finally bitten the dust so I need a replacement.

I'm going to go for something that records onto memory cards this time I think, rather than digital tape as the Sony does.

In general, however, the Sony did me fairly well, except for one major annoyance. I video outdoors a lot (out on boats or whatever), and if we're moving then all I get is the roar of wind noise across the mics. Very irritating as it makes the gentlest of breezes sound like a howling gale!

Are there any sensible budget camcorders (thinking £150 - £200 but could go more) that eliminate (or at least reduce) this, either via technology and/or microphone position?

and what is considered a good camcorder at this sort of price point?

Thanks for thoughts all. smile

If you can find a recorder at that price with a socket to take a mic, then you can buy and position the mic where it won't pick up so much noise (and choose one that has a foam cover).

It's always a problem - even for pros with £10k cameras

That's one solution, although I seem to be struggling to find many that have this facility.

Found this:

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/sony-handycam-dcr-sr5...

Sound In-built microphone with wind-break filter
Zoom microphone
13mm speaker (adjustable volume)

Anyone had experience of this kind of set up?

I'd get a separate strap-on mic and a fluffy dog.
