Hi guys, i am looking for a Macro lens to fit my Nikon D40.
I think it is a 52mm fitting.
Anyone got one they dont need anymore or any advice on what budget lens is worth buying?

Cheers

Good question.

First, the fitting is 'Nikon'; 52mm sounds like the filter thread size (the front end)

If you want autofocus on the D40, then you'll need an AF-S lens like the one on the right:

http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/60mm-afd-vs-afs.htm

The one on the left, which was my first macro lens, won't autofocus on your camera but will work perfectly in all other respects.

Sigma call it HSM:

A new macro lens won't be cheap and an older s/h one may not be AF-S/HSM, so keep your eyes open.

Usualy suspects are the tamron 90 and sigma 105 , not sure either will autofocus on the nikon?
Sigma do a 60f2.8 too.

Realy cheap is a consina 100mmf3.5, again not sure if it will autofocus.

TBH with macro your usualy manualy focusing but they do make decent potrait lenses too.

That's fine, then head for eBay like I did. The main thing you have to decide is whether you want AF or not. As has been said, it's not as important in the macro world as in 'normal' photography.

If you are thinking of a screw on magnifier to fit an existing lens then eBay or maybe a local camera/electronics fair or similar could be source. I'm not sure they really class as a 'macro' lens in the way that such things are usually discussed here. Also such adapters are not camera related - they go with lenses and lens filter sizes usually. Claimed 'macro' lenses for certain compact and bridge cameras may appear to break that rule since the cameras and lenses are one and the same.

Can anyone recommend where to buy a used macro lens on line or a good camera shop in Glasgow?

LongQ's got me thinking. Are we talking about a dedicated macro lens (as in the links I posted) or a strap-on jobbie on the front? It would explain why you gave a filter thread size...

If the latter, lots of strap-on jobbies here: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p398...

If you want a screw on diopter lens then the canon 500D is very well rated, 72 or 77mm so you will need an adapter but thats not much or a hastle, I beleive nikon make some t series ones or something?
