Not looked into a camera for a few years. I have a Digital SLR thats used sometimes. But want to replace my Olympus 770 SW waterproof Compact Camera.

I will be using it in a few weeks for Le mans. I don't have room for the SLR and tripod ( taking myself and borther in law in out Tiger supercar, Caterham type car)

So I'm used to 7.1 megapixels and waterproof camera but want something with more than 3x optical zoom. Waterproof would be great but not essential.

Not over £350 and I can use manual settings as well

Also I love gagets so do your best

Whats worth looking into and how many megapixels is too much ?

Panasonic DMC-TZ10.

12x Optical zoom; Wide-angle lens; 12.1 Megapixels; HD Video; Built-in GPS (so it knows where each photo was taken).

£269.99 from buyacamera.co.uk

Canon S90 if you want something pocket sized - otherwise Canon G11. Although the Panasonic TZ series are not too shabby...

This would be my choice too, as the next best thing to a DSLR.

If you want proper manual control (i.e. aperture/shutter/iso etc) in a compact camera then there's only two options: Canon S90 or Lumix LX-3

Neither have large zooms though, so I'd probably got with a Lumix TZ-10 for your requirements smile

Yeah, but it's a token gesture compared to the two I listed which have been designed as manually controlled compact cameras.

Don't get me wrong the TZ10 is a great camera and probably perfect for the OP as it has a much larger zoom on it.

the manual settings on the TZ's are pretty shocking really, its the biggest gripe I have with mine, I'd go for the cannon powershot "SX210 IS" if I were getting one again 14x optical zoom 28 to 392mm is impressive but maybe overkill but more in the way of manual options

Stunning info all, a great start and will start looking

As for the Pan DMC-TZ10 I looked at this a hour a go at Currys, was in the Mall in bristol and popped into look. Seeing your post a price of £269 an understamd why I never buy from currys. they wanted £330 irked

Don't the latest TZ's (TZ8/ 10) offer comprehensive manual controls? (ie. Aperture/ Shutter Priority and Full Manual Modes)

(I'm currently geeking over this as I'm seriously torn between a new TZ and the FZ38!! smile)

mine is an older TZ5 that I've had for a few years but yes the newer ones do come with a lot more manual control apperture and shutter priority etc but for a superzoom point and click I think I'd move from the lumix to the cannon, its not as pretty but I just think the TZ's have lost their way a bit, the cannon should have excelent manual control as its what cannon do well in their higher end point and clicks.

Oh yes and there's currently £35 cash back from cannon on its camera so the cheapest I've seen it as is £269 then take the £35 off so £234 is a decent price

Edit
Just to say I love my TZ5 it was an amazing camera when it came out for the money and if the build quality has remained similar its a tough cookie as its my festival camera, I have no doubt the TZ10 will be a great camera I just think the Cannon will be better.

Double Edit
The Sony HX5 whilst not having the max zoom of the others looks pretty impressive too

Only that I was torn between the HX5, the Panny TZ10 & the Canon SX210. I read every review I could find (and there are a lot on the internet) and overall the Panny seemed to be consistently the highest rated of the three. That's why I bought one.

Intresting that as the HX5 from what I have read has got better reviews. main reason for asking if it's any good is that many on here know their stuff and not sure if Sony are any good at making compact camera's. I never had a sony before. But aware their Tv's etc are good

In the waterproof camp .... Panasonic FT1 and FT2. FT1 - 4.6x optical zoom, 12mp. FT2 - 6x optical zoom, 14mp. AVCHD video recording as well.

Apparently the FT1 can be had for around £200, the FT2 is around £300. Not as good an all round camera as some of the others here, but definitely some of the best compact waterproof types.
