Ok, only started using this today, but cannot for the life of me do what I want!
I have an image of my car in front of a nice background. I want to make the background black and white and leave my car in colour...so....
I can select my car, inverse the selection and fiddle with the colour mix, but wouldn't it be easier to convert to greyscale? So...
I select the car and paste it into a new layer, then make the original image greyscale, but aaaahhhh, it makes the new layer greyscale as well!!
Please help! Thanks, Ben

Don't know the Gimp all that well but if you convert an image to grayscale you change the format of the whole image. Thus if you paste something into it that will assume the same format - grayscale. So leave the image format in RGB. Select the background and desaturate it, that would work. The most control over the grays of the background would be using the GIMP equivalent of Photoshops' channel mixer in monochrome mode - I'm pretty sure it has something like that but I'm not sure what it's called.I have an image of my car in front of a nice background.
