I'm always having problems with card readers. They either fall apart or stop working or worse still, corrupt my memory cards.

Can anyone recommend a good quality reader that can take both SD and CF cards that is both quick and affordable?

I'm using 35 in 1 Hama USB 2.0 card reader and it works without any problem. I think it was pretty cheap too.

It's this one.

Most on here seem to use card readers - I have one for if there is a problem, but usually just connect my camera to the 'puter and download. Assuming you have a fast camera/card/computer - why use a card reader? It's no faster, and every time you take the card out of the camera you risk damage and loss of data.

I know I'm in the minority here, but (apart from spec of components) don't know why.

This is what I'm doing as my card reader is knackered but it just seems much slower than a card reader.....

Snap - I picked it up at Nikon Expo for a tenner.

I used to go direct from camera, as per Get, but now use a card reader. Can't remember why - I think it was faster.

I've not had any problems with the two of these I bought for £1.99 delivered, I have one on the main computer and one in the camera bag just in case.

The only potential problem with that one is;

SD (Secure Digital up to 2GB- but not compatible with SD-HC cards (typically 4GB and over)

I have a cheapo USB2, Pre-SDHC reader bought from 7DS a few years ago and have never had a problem with it. For SDHC cards I have a couple of adapters that came with the Sandisk cards and plug straight in to a USB port. But most often I just stick the card into the multi-card slot in one of the Notebooks and download from there.

I never download directly from the camera (Unless tethered) - too slow, especially from my elderly Canon Pro1 which is only USB1 but produces 8Mb RAW files - and I have to find the right cable for the camera since the connections are not all the same. Plus in many cases I will have used several cards so putting the cards into a reader is less of a problem than swapping cards in the camera. The camera, assuming a card with spare capacity is still installed, remains available for any shots I might wish to take.

I guess it all depends on how you work.

True, but not a problem for me as the 40D uses CF cards.

I have two Sandisk readers, and haven't had any problems with either.
