another which lens question!?
Discussion
Right, i know you are all probably sick to death of these, but here goes anyway!
looking for a lens to take to bike trackdays to snap my mates in action. and hopefully train them to snap me in action too!
Budget is £1k, mount is canon 50d. already have 18-200mm canon. i'm not sure, but think 400mm will be enough?
I have been looking at the canon 100-400mm L series, but its over budget.
That leaves Sigma 120-400mm or Sigma 150-500mm.
any other options / ideas / opinions!?

A used 100-400 is a slighlty iffy deal, but not as iffy as a new sigma from those your looking at!
Go for as late a 100-400L as you can if you go used, all 'L's have date codes telling you the month/year of manufacture.
(BTW its a long standing rumour its getting replaced, that could affect used values... but dont hold your breath).
You need all that reach?

Would have left just about enough for a 2nd hand teleconverter too, but stick to 1.4x for that lens

not sure if i need the reach, was hoping someone had done this type of snapping before and could advise!
as its trackdays, there is no special access, so am likely to be quite far from the action!
on the used lens front - i see the value in trying to get a good used canon lens. From a practical point of view, i couldnt spot a bad one, and there is no warranty or comeback if the lens is faulty / soft etc. lots written about the 100-400mm and the variable performance. heard of one photographer who returned 3 new lenses before he got a good one...

I've just picked up a 70-300 USM Canon and awaiting to try it out. Paid just under £300 2nd hand but it seems a good copy.
I was tempted with the 100-300 Sigma F4 but theyre 2nd hand for about £500. I figured that if I started getting some consistently decent shots with the Canon then I could upgrade without losing money on it. If I find I'm s
te at motorsport or seldom use the lens, then I havent spent a fortune trying it out.

I used to own the canon 100-400 beleive me it's a crap lens in comparison to the much newer Sigma which was AP's lens of the year for 2009
