Video camera wanted - but which one ?

I'm looking for a video camera but I'm not sure which one to go for .. usage will be filming car's (and home movies .. but not told the g/f yet..)

Budget up to £500.

Any advice on which one and format.

The smallest Sony digital video camera ever is £1300 over here or $999 mail order in the states.

Just over £500 and the biggest bargain currently in vid cams I reckon...
