Hi

I've been taking pictures of cars and love doing it but I've been using a standard digital camera and my phone (which seems to be better than the camera). I want to get a digital SLR that can handle action shots and stills.

Can anyone help

Thanks

Best sports one is 1Dmk4 or D3s.

Best stills one is D3x, 1Dsmk3 or A900.

If you've a budget biggrin then look at any entry level one, canon 500/550d or 50D or nikon D5000 or D90.

It's the lenses that swallow a lot of money.

If you're going to "do" some motorsport stuff than an APC size sensor will be a cheaper entry point because of the extra magnification that a smaller sensor gives. In Nikon terms that'll be something like a D90 or D300. A D300 and a couple of decent lenses will run about £3k. If it's close up (studio?) work then a full frame camera will be the weapon of choice. The camera body will start at £3k and with a couple of lenses £2k or so on top.

On the other hand you could pick up a Nikon D50 on fleabay with an 18-55mm kit lens for about £200 or so and it will get you going while you figure out what DSLR's are all about. Add a Nikon 70-300mm zoom for maybe £100 and you'll be on your way... oh and do buy a monopod if you're going to use the big zoom lens. It'll make a huge difference.

What he said.

No point in asking what is the best camera but not stating how much you want to spend or where you intend to use the camera (tracks, shows etc).

D3x with the 600mm would be good at Le Mans...

But to the O/P - any Nikon or Canon with a kit lens will be a good start. a 70 - 300 mm lens on a Nikon will bring the cars a lot closer.

The best camera is the one you have on you....or something like that. Any SLR will take a decent pic of a car, the more money you spend the more control over things you have.
