Time to update my shooter. I used to have a 1D Mk III up until the summer, but decided to sell and upgrade this spring. The 1D was great but the known focussing issues and lack of definite punch in the final images and pixels bugged me.

So now we the 5D or 7D to consider. I think the price of the new 1D Mark IV is a little high for a keen amateur like myself.

Things to consider...

I like shooting Motorsport, candid portraits and general landscape. So pretty diverse.

Any opinions please ?

5D full sized sensor, great for portraits and landscapes

7D cropped sensor better for action shots, also a little bit faster IIRC

Would a 7D and an original 5D be an option?

faster focusing and more reach from the 7D, but lovely lovely full frame from the 5D... 5D for me, but that's just because i like really shallow depth of field. Sounds like the 7D could be a better all rounder for you...

What lenses are you running?

If you were using 1DMkIII presume you are looking at 5D MkII?

Having just purhcased a 7D the other month I'm thrilled with it.

However, I'd have loved to buy a 5dMK2, but the extra cash meant it was a no-no. I've never shot with a full frame D-SLR so can't comment on the differences but I reckon most would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

My choice was aided by what lenses I already had. I could have afforded a 5D but I already had 3 EF-S lenses so in order to replace all of them with EF lenses would have pushed the budget well out of control so I went for the 7D.

Am I unhappy? No, certainly not. It's a lovely camera, feels good to hold and use and more importantly (at least to me) is easy to use without too many menus and features.

If you were disappointed with the 1d's AF, steer well clear of the 5d unless you only shoot still life. The 5d's AF system is fairly weak, especially compared to the 7d.
