Jobs in Video Production, Photography, A/V etc
Discussion
[mods - is it ok to leave this thread here rather than the jobs section? the questions here are aimed more at the people in this forum]
I'm a little worried at the moment that the production company im working for isn't going to survive this year, so im trying to keep my ear to ground for other opportunities.
Theres a large variety of very talented people from all walks of life in this part of Pistonheads, so i thought it would be a good place to go for some advice:
Would anyone have any thoughts, companies they think i should look at, suggestions, etc
Let me give you my background
- im currently a freelance video cameraman, and for the most part i work almost full time for one production company as a senior cameraman. Im very experienced with a whole variety of broadcast cameras and equipment, ive organised shoots, worked on awards shows and documentaries etc, and im also a very experienced steadicam op. Im also very useful on the post production side - i have a lot of experience with final cut pro, im apple certified in Motion, and im a fairly decent motion graphic designer - ive been working with photoshop and flash since i was a teenager.
Because i've been mainly working for one company, i have limited contacts. I also have minimal amounts of equipment- being unable to guarantee return on investment, means i haven't forked out for my own gear.
But most cameraman positions i see are one week here, one week there, expect you to work for peanuts, and also expect you to come with armfuls of equipment!
So im really open to anything. My photography side isnt as good as my video production skills, but id happily work as a photographers assistant - and id make a damn good assistant!
I just want to work really. Anyone think of anywhere i could send a letter to, websites i could look at? (currently i only know of mandy.com, grapevine and broadcast freelancer which you have to pay for). Full time or part time, camerawork, photography assistant, photoshopping and graphics work, im open to any ideas! I just want to work hard and be able to but my energy and skills to good use, and to work with some great people
Sorry if this post is a bit out of the odds here, but im just a little concerned about my future - i dont want to scrabble away doing one days camerawork here and there.
many thanks in advance for any replies
regards - Pete

bbc I know are currently looking for people in all sorts of roles
also worth keeping your eye on mandy, alot of poo goes through there but also a lot of very good opportunities, might also be worth putting together a show reel of you work and getting it out to every major production house you can think of.
Be proactive in finding work don't wait for a wanted advert

already have a showreel, and a website to showcase it on. I've done quite a lot of emailing, but I do need to get my bottom in gear though- id planned to get a few hundred dvds of my showreel made, and sent it to every production company i can findalso worth keeping your eye on mandy, alot of poo goes through there but also a lot of very good opportunities, might also be worth putting together a show reel of you work and getting it out to every major production house you can think of.

will have a look at what the beeb are advertising. They have a really cak handed online system, last time i applied. you have to fit your CV into their system of drop down menus, and a lot of my cv just couldnt be inputted into their restrictive system
