Comments please - self portraits
Discussion
Well due to my lack of a model, I have decided to try taking pic's of myself, (this way I can take as long as I like to set up etc) Only problem is it seems to be harder than it looks to actually model, I have millions of pictures where I just look a bit stupid I also seem to have very few poses. Anyway constructive comments would be great.

God, you're brave - I gave up long ago and get somebody that knows what they're doing if I want a portrait! I can't think of many more frustrating things to try and do in life but photography yourself and expect good results!
But very good start.
Anglepoise lamp sounds a fine starting point (depending upon what white balance you want to achieve, you can always go for a custom setting) and of course B&W always works well with portraits......
But very good start.

Give yourself a prop - that'll always make it easier. Simpo Two managed a couple of half-decent shots of me (given the poor subject matter he had, not his talent) by shoving my camera in my hands. OK - you can't quite do that, but a single bloom or an item from a hobby or a book or even a cup and saucer (not a wine glass - I always think it makes the subject look like a heavy boozer (whether they are or not)).Anglepoise lamp sounds a fine starting point (depending upon what white balance you want to achieve, you can always go for a custom setting) and of course B&W always works well with portraits......

I'm just using an anglepoise lamp and a flash gun.
I thought it was going to be along those lines
Check your WB settings either custom or with a card, or shoot RAW and fix later. Self portraits are always difficult, you know you want to do a good photo but it's hard to make it not look too staged.
Have a look at Miss Aniela on Flickr for some ideas: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ndybisz/
Self portraits are tough because you can't see what you're photographing and focusing can be hit and miss... I think you did well.
In fact I need to do some more of me for my forthcoming web update, and I'm not looking forward to it...

That means you're working with two different colour temperatures - the anglepoise (tungsten) is evidently behind you and giving the reddish cast. You may like it, but if not you could use a second flash, or convert to BW, or shoot RAW and process for each colour temperature and blend together. But apart from this technicality, a good effort. In fact I need to do some more of me for my forthcoming web update, and I'm not looking forward to it...
