The missus wants to have a crack at wedding photography ultimately and will undertake a course soon, but advice as to what digital SLR camera to use as a beginner would be appreciated (and also so I can use it on cars!)
Rough budget would be 500 squid.......any good?

Hmmm, very tight budget. A second hand Canon D30 with a 24-85 would fit the bill if you can find one for that.

I suppose technically all that 'SLR' means is that you can look directly through the taking lens. So a camera could still be an SLR but not have interchangeable lenses... how important is that facility to you?

I think for the future it would be better to have it than not unless I hear otherwise?

Assuming your interest will increase, you'll want to try new things over time, and if you get to the point where what you want to do needs a different lens...

Trouble is, such cameras are, IIRC, around the £1K+ mark. I think you have to decide how important your hobby/business is going to be, and invest accordingly. If you can get the VAT back and depreciate the rest, that will help considerably.

I'd take the view that it's better to have a few features that you don't need, than fall short and find it won't do something you want one day.

Could always try second-hand. Ebay is good for a start.

Beware e-bay.. absolutely riddled with fraud sales at the mo.. esp. in the Digital SLR section. I personally inform ebay of 3-4 rogues per week, and know a few buddies that do the same. They're very grateful, but it continues.

TIPS!

* Dont bid on 3-day auctions.

* Dont bid in an auction that hides the bidders details.

* Check the seller's other items - if you find 100 premium, diverse electronic goods, all at crazy low prices - beware.

* Caution if goods/seller out of the country.

* Do contact seller to arrange to pay & collect

hope this helps!

Ed

btw dont let me put you off ebay - it's fab - I've bought / sold a fair bit.. just be cautious when buying esp. if the amount ionvolved is hefty.

All good points above, the other one to look out for is HiJacked ebay identities.

Look at the sellers past history, if he/she has been selling, say, cheap ceramic figures for a couple of years and now all of a sudden he's got £2K of camera kit for sale, then the bells and whistles should go off - walk away and report it to eBay.

The above is prevalent in the Hiend 'phones sections. I had email ping pong with someone trying to sell me a £400 phone!

Be sensible, think about what you're doing and you're unlikely to get your fingers burnt too bad.

However if you're the type of person who falls for the 'Nigeria scam' then DON'T BID!

Excellent advice thanks......And i just managed to get a new sink through Ebay, but I will take the hint on more expensive items, even though the cameras 'appear' good value.
I am naturally suspicious anyway luckily so will look for well rated threads.

This thread that I started may be of assistance with regard to cameras and Ebay.

You'll see that an Ebay trader based in Hong Kong called Digital Rev was recommended to me by someone that had first hand experience. They were very helpful and from the emails sent to me they clearly knew their stuff. I was given vouchers for Christmas so ended up buying in the UK. If this hadn't been the case I would've given serious consideration to using Digital Rev. When I eventually make up my mind about what lens I need, I may well buy it from them.

Hope this helps

Just got the Canon Rebel SLR digi, can't sing it's praises enough!!

ok, i paid about £900, but i got mine new, with a 70-300mm extra lens, plus a 1GB 40speed memory card! i reckon if you look hard enough, you may get one without the extra lens, and maybe a smaller memory card for your £500. good thing about it is you change the lenses, not just stuck to your normal run of the mill digi cameras. i'll be taking a pic of the chim tomorrow with it, just be prepared to be taken aback with the resolution and quality. Top Camera!

Still have stage fright!

Went out this weekend to do the 'ducks on water' pics. Learned the hard way that my camera has likes to under expose at times!

Or better still, Ms Paperbag!

Got your email BTW, I'm not sure what's happening either, suggest you drop Physchobert a line, he's organising this one.

Most digital cams err towards underexposure because you cn recover underexposed shots, but not shots with "blown highlights", ie totally white bits.

Oh, and I think *everyone* takes pics of ducks with their new camera lol

I you come to Caversham, you can get swans too....

I would guess that the camera's metering system is being confused by you taking these pictures. You will notice looking at the water that it is reflecting the sky, which is much brighter than the ducks which you want to be properly exposed. Since there will probably be more bright water in the shot than dark duck, the camera will set the exposure for the water.

The person who posted about digital cameras underexposing is right, although I am not sure that they are specifically programmed to underexpose. Sometimes it is advisable to set the camera to underexpose on purpose, so that later you can lighten it up without "blowing out" the highlights.
