I am looking to upgrade to an SLR camera having used a bridge type camera - Fuji S6500 which has served me well. A few people have recommended the Canon 40D. I am looking to spend less than £800, but willing to go a little higher for the right camera.

Any thoughts on this model and any others that I should consider would be appreciated.

Thanks

I've just bought the 40d and I'm thrilled with my decision. Not too expensive now, but a little more functionality to hand than the 450d to give it some futureproofing.

Does the £800 include lens(es)?

Find a decent camera shop and pick up and play with different cameras.

I could convince you that a nikon is the best camera in the world but it could turn out you have cannon shaped hand.

So ignore everyone here and go and play

40D is a bundle of fun. Hugely competent body and a great price, canon realy hit the spot with that one.

I guess they will be going for 400-450 leaving some nice cash for a lens or two.

Another vote for the 40D! I went from the 350D to 40D, it's an excellent (almost indestructible) camera. Had mine out in all weathers, and it's been completely abused, still works a treat wink

Seconded, I don't like the feel of a Canon SLR at all but love the Nikon ergonomics and button layout, some feel the exact opposite. So try before you buy, doesn't matter what anyone says.

Much more budget concious, but I've just delved into the DSLR world with a Canon EOS 1000d. I'm delighted with it in just about every sense; it'll be a long time before I 'out-grow' this one.

This would leave a nice bit of change for a lens, too.
