Afternooning

Seeing as christmas is coming I need to buy myself a present. Budget £500 brand new or used.

I would like a walkabout lens for my Canon 450d - I have the Kit lens but this will be binned.

I don't need too wide as I have the Siggy 10-20 and a Rubbish Tamron (Although it does the job) 70-300mm.

Ideally I would like something to around 100mm top end?

Any reccomendations?

Thanks

If you're lucky you might get a 24-105L F4 IS for 500 smile

You can get a new, split-from-kit 24-105mm for about £750.

I've always found my 28-70mm Tokina f/2.8 ATX PRO to be pretty sharp, a good weight and well made (well, almost indistructible). Secondhand you can get one for about £350, new they are about £500 I think.

It doesn't quite have the reach for every eventuality, which is why I am looking to get the 24-105 at some point.

Given the choice, though, I'd save a little more and get the 24-105 out of a kit as it has stabilisation.

I've got a Canon 28-135IS I'm toying with getting rid of (well, upgrading past it). Not the sharpest lens I've got, but still pretty useful. Have lens hood, UV filter and CP filter with it. They're £350 or so new plus the hood and filters on top, so if you're interested, make me an offer...

If you're very lucky!

They seem to always sell for about £650 on ebay every time!

I just bought a 24-70 L which on first impressions is bloody brilliant, although best part of a grand to add to your collection.

I have had and I am currently selling on ebay a 28-135mm which is a really good walkabout lens yes You should eb able to pick one up for sub £200 probably nearer £150 based on the current ones on ebay and the bids on mine.

Me too. I'm not really getting on with the EF-S 17-85mm IS USM I bought as a walkabout lens a couple of months ago.

Another vote for the Canon 28-135.
I have one and it is easily the lens that stays on my (crop body) camera the most.

My walkabout lens is a Sigma 18-50 F2.8 EX - worth a look. Comfortably within budget.

Why not? i find mine a great all-round lens for most shots?

I bought a 24-105L new from Jacobs for less than £500 just a couple of years ago.

It shows you just how mad the market has gone (or, rather, how crap the £ is compared to the Yen).

Correct yes

I paid £950 (and got a further £80 cash back from Canon) for a new 70-200 L last year!

I bought as an upgrade from the kit 18-55 lens (I've got a 400D) and although the addition of IS and USM is welcome I thought it would give me a bit more reach than it does.

I've just bought a new one which I use on a 50D and it's very impressive.

However, I now know why they call it 'the brick' wink

Heavy or what!
