Really nice, how have you got the sky nice and vibrant whilst exposing the faces correctly? It's something of a rhetorical question; I just can't get the hang of flash.

Cheers miniman. I used a full CTO (Colour Temperature Orange) gel on the flash which was corrected by setting the white balance to tungsten 3200K. The net result is an extra blue tint to anything which wasn't illuminated by the flash. I also turned down the ambient exposure a little: I think most of these were shot at minus 1.33.

I like this one - Jules Verne meets Blackbeard:

It's just a question of balancing the light on the foreground with the light from the background. If the sky has decent light in it, ordinary fill flash will work (TTL-BL if Nikon) - if that's still too harsh, you can either dial in -ve flash comp and matching +ve EV, or try slow synch mode which leaves the shutter open longer to brighten the background.

You see, this is my problem. I understand that I need fill flash. I just don't understand how to make the camera / flash do it. 40D/430EXII for what its worth.

It can be confusing miniman... If it helps, when you stop down your exposure by, say, -2.0EV, this will affect everything including flash output. This is fixed by ramping up the flash power with +2.0EV of flash compensation.

Cheers SimpoTwo. The Steampunk guys were cool -

(Ace perch for the gull smile)

All the shots were at f4 by the way, made possible with Pocket Wizards 'HyperSync' on a MiniTT1 / FlexTT5 combo.

I thought the lighting looked pretty direct - but you're using off-camera flash as well?

I just stuck the flash on a skinny old monopod and held it a couple of feet away from the camera. Hmmm... perhaps I should've lifted the flash higher / added a small diffuser?

Thanks YB & Yes mate - See you Thursday.

Seeing as it's not a full-blown fashion shoot I think they look fine as they are. A small diffuser won't make much difference unless you're very close. I've never used off-camera flash in a reportage situation as I only have two arms and like to be highly mobile, so it's either an SB800 on a Stroboframe bracket for reportage, or studio lighting in the studio - nothing in the middle!
