Can, quite happily! But the next question is what are you going to use it for?

I might use it to take some photos hehe.

What exactly do you mean by what are you going to use it for?

Canon 1000D is good, misses very few features of it's big brother the 450D.

The Nikon alternative is the D40, i'd recommend handling them both and seeing which feels best.

You're going to be spending more on a long lens than you will on the SLR body. Might be worth sticking the budget up a bit, grabbing a kit (body+short lens) then putting as much as you can into something that goes to 300mm'ish

I think i will be buying second hand so i will be able to find a camera that comes with a lens. It is just a case of what camera to get.

The one that suits you best and you're going to get along with! Canon or Nikon, dont matter much really. Dont buy a Sony...good TV's and all but thats where it stops really.

If you're going S/H try a Nikon D70 off flea bay. But "fast" long lenses cost a fortune whatever the brand. One of the cheapest Nikon lenses for on track stuff would be a Nikkor 300mm f4 lens - but that alone will eat your budget and it's not the fastest lens to focus. Try doing a search - your question has been asked many times.

Market leaders are Canon and Nikon, stick with them if you think there is a chance you might get into it big time (lots of well respected lenses, both new and second hand etc).

How much has that cost you all together (camera + lens)?

Second hand Canon 350D body.... and then get a decent piece of glass (second hand would be fine!)

the 350 was and still is a fantastic DSLR..... its the glass that makes it better!

How much would the 'glass' be?

Also how much would the 350D body be?

You think so? Question then, which other camera maker uses sony sensors in their cameras?

Sonys have built in image stabilisation and can use all the excellent older (and cheaper) minolta AF lenses. Nothing wrong with sony kit. Sure the A200 is a bit cheap and plasticy but so are all the entry level bodies.

I have been doing my homework and think i will be going with the Canon EOS 350D or the Nikon D40.

What do you guys think of the two?

I think we all agree that you should handle them both before you buy. They feel very different in the hands, but both takes similar quality photos. (Both good). Jessups stock them both I believe (and somtimes do an internet price match thing).
