Other than ebay - anyone know where i can get one, really want to give this a go but dont want to have to spend £ on a maglite!

Am i right in thinking i will need something quite powerful to get a decent effect?

Woza.

Edit: how cool is this?

3w LED aluminum job from Tesco, £8-12 depending on carcass size for AA or C batteries.

AA is non focusable so adjust the beam spread by standing closer or further away from your subject, and if you're closer then adjust the light strength by stopping up.

Keep your semi-transparent Quality Street wrappers to change the light colour smile

i found some led torches in a toy shop, that cycle through red green and blue- can take some crazy light painting with them.
And i was honestly in a toy shop looking for something for my nephew. honest! i wasnt playing with all the remote control cars. not one....

i also picked up another that is a long beam of acrylic, like a little light saber, that also cyles through colours, producing crazy colour streaks.

Woza, the torch I've recommended prob won't be any good for creating something like the pic you've linked to. For that you'll want keyfob leds from the pound shop, as you need to shine them towards the camera and a major torch will destroy your shot.

What you'll get from the 3w jobbie is the ability to fully light a subject in the middle of an otherwise dark frame- about 2 mins, this one:

And here's what happens if you hang your cheap LED torch from the ceiling and whack it wobble:

7dayshop used to sell this particular one - made by LEDlenser, but is now discontinued - it is approx 3 feet long, half of which is a clear perspex tube, the other end is metal and it was originally designed to be able to stick into grass etc as a moodlight outside wink
