Following on from the fantastic portraits thread i had an idea that sprung from a few pics of my granddad i took. As the thread title really, do people think this could work? Ill start with one of the pics i took along with the story, but as im not on my pc at the min its not the best photo i took but should get the thread rolling....

This is my granddad, he was born in Osijek, Croatia, he has an older and a younger brother. His mother died wheb he was 2, his farther met someone else about 5 years later who had another son from her ex partner. His farher wasnt really that interested in kids and his step mother wasnt intrested in her step sons. They were quite often thrown out the house to fend for themselves finding food and things to do from a young age. In his teens he worked for a farmer out in the countryside doing general labour for food and housing, after a period during the war he chose to move to Austria for a new life during the train journey, the train was taken over by the nazi's and he was taken to a labour camp for a number of years (he wont tell us where or for how long!) during which time as you can immagine he saw rather alot of brutality. Finally at the end of the war the redcross arrived and rescued him weighing about 4stone and severley malnourished, he was brought to Dover and dumped at the docks, he found his way towards london and lived on the streets for a period before managing to get enough money to get a train out of london, he jumped on the first train which came into the station which finished at Nottingham, again he had nowhere to live but found a place behind a chip shop, where he became friends with the owner who lent him some money for a flat to rent, so he could get a job. He later met my gran. They had their first child who died aged 2 on xmas eve after choking to death on a carrot. They later gave birth to my mother and my uncle. In 1989 my uncle finally persuaded my grandad to sign some forms from the red cross to try and track down his family in croatia and austria, as my granddad assumed they all died in the war, but we were in for a shock! We found we had oover 100 living relitives in austria and croatia and australia! Finally just before he turned 65 he found out he had TB and lung cancer and was rushed in for life saving surgery. So lets see your pics and story

Nice story, they don't make men like that any more.

My mum's dad, innocent looking boy. Later joined the army, fought in Burma (amongst other places) in WWII.

Lovely family shot you think, he's second from the left...

Nice man, a hero we all thought..

Well, he died a few years ago and I have since discovered that he sexually abused most of my family (my mum, cousins, sisters, and possibly others). They don't talk about it (not surprising really), and it has since torn the family apart. Don't really know what else to say about him other than I wish the ct was still alive.

So you could beat him to a pulp without further thought?

So he could be tried for what he has done to everyone. Why no one knew this was going on (or talked about it) before his death really frustrates me (and others). Smiling all the way to his grave the cheeky bd.

Sorry to hear that Neil. Most abused people unfortunately think they are alone when infact they aren't.

Just goes to show how pictures don't reveal the true person/image.

So whats the story with this?? Or is it a p155 take?

Thanks for the reply's guys, i will upload some of the better photos that i took when i get near some broadband :s
Neil sorry to hear of the plight with you grandfarther, its quite often the case that no one ever knows whats going on, and thats partly the reason for the thread. As annomous as a face is, every one of them has a story to tell of some kind, be it happy, sad or damn right disgustibg (as in your case)

Regards
Matt
