I am in the market for a 40d. I know there aren't as many around now with it being discontinued but where would you guys recommend that I buy it from? There must be a few choice places which people use regularly on here?

If they have stock and a there or thereabouts price I'll usually buy from Warehouse Express

Dunno, I shoot with a Nikon smile

I just had a look and they dont list it anymore though. Seeing as it's you, I also checked out Camerabox who I've bought from previously and they've been pretty decent.

In stock, ready to go:

seems quite a good price too. I think at this stage, I might just have to buy the body only first and then look to get a lens separately. Quite a few on here have said that i'd be better off doing that with so many "kit" lenses on ebay going cheap. Ive got 3 in mind - a 50mm prime, a wide-angle, and then the big money telephoto. Thats before I think about flash guns, monopods, bags, memory cards & battery grips! Ouch this photography thing soon gets expensive!

I'd be a little wary of camerabox. I ordered a lens from them last year that was supposedly in stock but three weeks later they finally admitted they didn't have it.

Anyway I live in Northern Ireland and was in Jessops at lunch. I think it was £858 with a 17-45? IS lens. There was one in their cabinet. I can ask later in the week if they have any more as you could get it sent to your local store.

eek
Some online retailers were doing them body-only last summer for £600 with £100 Canon cashback...and that lens isn't worth even £200, let alone £300!

With the 50D out I'd not want to pay more than ~£600 body-only, or equivalent.

(Good camera, by the way - I've been very happy with mine)

It looks like it'll be costing me more for the 40d than what people were buying them for a year ago.

I can pick them up 2nd hand on ebay for around £400 but obviously i'm without a warranty.

Canon outlet: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Canon-Outlet-EOS-40D-EF17-85... but it looks like theyre not IS lenses?

On another note, I'm a big fan of landscapes, and as such keep looking at shots which have been taken with full frame at say 17mm. Without doing the maths, would a 10-20mm lens produce similar wide-angle shots?

I bought my D40 for about £240 a year ago from Amazon - I think £400 is way too much.

I bought my 20D from the Canon Outlet on eBay, and it's been fine, aside from a fair bit of dust.

Re: 17-85 and 70-300, I don't THINK Canon do those lenses without IS. Double-check, as it doesn't specify much about the lenses. The old 70-300 IS is still worth ~£300+ (as-is the 17-85IS, although that lens gets mixed reports), so that's looking like a good package all-round at the moment...

Can anyone tell me whether lenses to fit the 40d will fit the higher end bodies too?

Managed to handle a 40d and 450d side by side today, local Currys store has the 40d in with 17-85mm USM for £759.

'Higher end' is a confusing term to determine with Canons new 7D announcement wink

The 40D will take Canon EF and EF-S lenses - these lenses will also fit on the new 7D.

EF-S lenses will NOT fit to the 5D(mark2) or any of the 1D series bodies.

The 17-85mm lens you mention is EF-S, so will not fit on a 5D & 1D camera bodies.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

thats great cheers. I was just thinking that if in the future, I decided I wanted a FF body, whether the lenses I was to buy for the 40d would fit. I guess I could just sell and move on if necessary.
