I'm getting married next year in Krakow (my better half is Polish, although not from Krakow), and we're just starting to get the planning underway. We have contacted a couple of wedding planners to help us oversee the whole process since we're based in blighty, but so far they've been pretty wooly about what you get for the money they are quoting for the photographer.

I'm sure if we persist with the questioning, we'll be able to get a clearer idea of exactly what's being quoted for, but even then we'll have no way of knowing how good the person is until it's too late. Since the photographs are the only tangible memento of the big day, I'm quite keen to get it right and to ensure the photographer we use is of a decent standard.

I've therefore been wondering if it's worth swerving the wedding organiser's choice of photographer and organising something myself? Any thoughts or advice on the best way to resolve this issue are most welcome, as are any direct recommndations for photographers in that neck of the woods.

You could tout your local photographers and see which if any would like a trip on Jet2 or whoever goes out that direction. Then you pick the guy/gal whos work you like and whos price you can deal with.

Downsides would be travel expenses (not too much).
Lack of language to deal with your other halfs family and friends.
Probably cost you more than someone who out in Poland.

Well I'd consider it for not much more than usual rates, but you'd have to sort out travel and accommodation for me because I'm a complete klutz at overseas travel and would never get through an airport without a helper!

There is a precedent - I do know a tog who was flown out to New York to cover a wedding smile

If you've not been then you're in for a treat. Beautiful city.
