Viewfinders on film cameras have a margin of error to allow for clipping during printing (eg visible area is about 85% of actual image recorded). However on digital cameras - well mine at least - the viewfinder is the same. For a while I was surprised when the photos looked better if I cropped them a bit! Then I figured out the cause - massive allowance round the edges. Why, in the digital world, can't it be 100%?
