Trying to get my head round Nikon names. Do they have a naming convention or not?

Camera bodies?

Its a bit all over the place

Dx , like D1, D2, D2x, D3 are pro

Dxxx are semi pro = D200, D200, D700

Dxx are two levels, low ned consumer , D60, D40, D40x, and mid range, D70, D80, D90

Then theres the D5000 which is in between the D60 and D90.

How do you figure that? The 1000d is worse than the 450d which is worse then the 500d. Yep, perfectly logical, silly me.

Exactly the same if you ask me.

Canon threw the 1000d in just like the d5000, so canons entry models aren't in any number sequence (1000->450->500)

The semi pro cameras are in ascending order (40d->50d)

And the pro cameras are descending (5d->1d)

At least Nikon have room to move with their pro bodies (d4, d5 etc) Canon are stuck with either releasing a new flagship scheme or forever appending MKs onto the 1d MKIII.

Don't even get me started on canon america. The 400d is something like Digital Rebel XTI. For some reason.

But what if you bought a 535 is it really a 535 or is it a 530 with a bigger screen or some such! wink

er... not on this planet! 325 = 2494cc - well the one I had, did! (though I admit the 335 lies a little)

Canon is easy:

1D - pro
xD - can't afford pro/high earning amateur
xxD - oo look at me, i must be good.
xxxD - amateur.
xxxxD - i have no idea what I'm buying but someone said SLR was good.

higher the number, the better the features in that bracket.

Cynic says to control prices and stop grey imports as you only get a warranty on the body in the country you bought it despite their lenses being a worldwide warranty confused

Let's hope Nikon resist the temptation to call their US models 'Maverick'!

D100, Damn, been done. 100D sounds too much like a Canon.

E100?

Or perhaps they will give them names like car models. 'Nikon Capybara' anyone? spin
