I recently brought a Nikon D90 in a 8GB bundle from Jessops and it came with an 8GB Sandisk SD card. I took some pictures today and I automatically went to take the card out and place it in my reader but it wouldn't detect so I clicked on the newest drive and it said I/O read error?

If I plug my camera in it will open the images so I can free them and if I place the card in my TV it will read it too but not via any of my computer readers??

I have a feeling it has to do with formatting? I watched the magic lantern DVD on how to use my camera and it said use the in camera formatting option before using the card for the first time. So I feel that has something to do with it?

Ah - that answers the question about what camera you bought!

Can your reader read other 8GB cards?

I have the same issue and am putting it down to the fact that my reader can't do 16GB SDHC cards. My netbook, printer etc all have no problems reading the card....

Having taken a look at it over the network in the printer, there is nothing special about the Nikon formatting. Indeed, mine worked in the camera with its original formatting.... Unfortunately I didn't try it in the reader before formatting it in the camera.

It might be an SD/SDHC issue, not sure. Read the manual about connecting the camera straight to a PC and see if that works. If not, assuming the photos aren't important, I'd format the card in camera and try again.

Best to find these things out early smile

As Simpo says, probably an SD/SDHC issue with the reader. My Sandisk reader won't read 4GB SDHC cards but plugging in using the small reader supplied with it is fine.

More that likely the reader you have is and SD card reader (basically anthying under 2GB). You have a SDHC card as its over 2GB so need a SDHC card reader, they look the same, they take the same card size but a SD card reader will not read a SDHC card. They are often supplied with a SDHC card just a small usb stick you plug them in. If not they can be had for about £4.

plug camera into PC via the USB / Mini USB lead and use the Nikon transfer software that came with the camera to transfer stuff over, i've got mine set so that the downloads go into a new folder each time to avoid a. duplicates b. a great big folder with millions of pictures in smile
