Hi,

I am going on holiday soon and want too know if i can download photo's to an external hardrive while abroad so that i can format the card to use again!

Is this a better option than having numerous cards?

If i did do the external hardrive would i need to take a laptop or could i upload the photo's direct?

Thanks in advance

Ross

You'll need either an image tank type device (I have an old XS Drive pro) or a laptop with a card reader.

The cost of SD cards is so cheap, just buy a few cards?
What card type are you using for your camera?

I've been thinking on the same thing, was wondering about the old iPod adapters, but they aren't broadly compatible.

Although as you've said, virtually all memory cards now are dirty cheap - the camcorder uses SDHC (£30 for 16gig, that'll give about 8 hours recording at 720p), SLR uses CF (similar prices to SDHC).

The only possible reason for carrying a laptop/netbook/databank box would be as a backup just in case the memory cards fail. I've only had 1 memory card fail in years of usage whilst having had a variety of SD/MMC/Memory Stick/CF devices, so even thats highly unlikely these days (and it was a no-name CF card that failed).

A quick look on the search would have revealed one of the many many times this has been asked in the past..

For example

If you've got an iPod (pre-classic, ie video, 5th gen, etc)

If your camera supports PTP, then buy one of these £18 boxes, plug into the bottom of your iPod, copy over the JPEGs (doesn't do raw apparently). I may get one myself, the Sony A200 supports PTP.
