Biggin Hill Air Fair
Discussion
Had a great day out last Saturday at BH, the first time I've been in 20 or so years and also the first time I've photographed an air show. TBH, I'm not entirely happy with the processing on all of these yet and may well go back and re-edit some of the set once I've lived with them for a few days, but I'm pretty happy with most of them. It was a pretty steep learning curve but thanks to a few pointers picked up around here I was generally in the right area. These are all shot on a Nikon D50 with a hired Nikon 80-400mm VR, mainly on aperture priority to flick between 1/200th-ish for the prop planes and 1/400ths and faster for the jets. C&C requested.
My personal favs:

Plus of course the obligatory XH588 shot:

And the whole set can be seen here.

They looka bit blue but otherwise very good for a first attempt.
A quicker way to set defined shutter speeds is to use shutter priority - you can of course change them indirectly using aperture but then the shutter speed will change as you point the camera at different subjects and in different directions.

^ What he said. I was a little confused as to why you'd use Av to try and control the shutter speed when there's a setting for it!
Great shots, my only C+C is you probably needed to dial in a point or two of positive exposure compensation. The camera has exposed for the average of the whole scene which leaves the clouds / sky lovely and exposed, but the undersides of the aircraft a little dark.
