What binoculars?
Discussion
Our house backs onto rolling fields that has plenty of wildlife to see, however as they have a habit of staying at the end of the field it would be nice to actualy see them a bit nearer!
So we are thinking of purchasing some bins, i thought a 10X pair would be appropiate for magnification and was hoping someone here will be an expert on the matter!
Looking to spend around £40/50 any recommendations on where and what type to buy, or makes to avoid ??
Thanks

I'm going out on a limb here - but I'd say lenses/optics.
Agreed; binoculars being essentially twin cameras with the sensors removed
However quite why photographers and videographers should be qualified to talk about binoculars is perhaps the dodgy step in the logic. Is there a birdwatching forum?
Put it back in The Lounge - bigger audience.
Too many fora =
Too few viewers =
Not enough responses.
Especially true when the forum title does not include the actual name of the topic you wish to discuss. If, in this case, the topic is general optics, then that's what the forum should be called - but of course, that will cause further problems such as whether you should be discussing spectacles or the upturned spirit bottles found behind bars.

What have Bins got to do with photography or video ?
Quite agree, stupid new format.....Where else would you suggest?

People interested in cameras and video are not necessary going to care or know anything about binoculars, and the subject is too small for its own forum, so how about the lounge where this started!!!???

These will probably do you - the 8 is the mag and the 40 is the diameter of the front optic, the higher this number the brighter the image. These will do for star gazing too.

Well I found this thread in the "What's New" section in no time at all!
Binoculars: Do not buy cheap bins. Waste of money. A decent set will last a lifetime so buy once.
I recommend a pair of Canon Image Stabilsing bins. The 10x30 IS set were so good we got a second pair for the wife. Don't be fooled by the HUMOUNGOUS price on the Canon site. You can find them cheaper than that.

Bins are usually sold in camera shops after all!!!

As said by another poster Eric, using 'What's New' as quite a few seem to be doing these days attracts a far wider audience than 'The Lounge' anyway (oh, and that's how I found it too).Too many fora =

Anyway - I'll stop there before this wanders off topic.
PS. Welcome back.
Even though "What's New" is the proposed panacea to all PHs current messy set-up, if this is combined with your "preferences", which is what has been encouraged. However, unless you have foresight and psychic powers, you may not have included in your preferences certain forum subjects.
Is the solution then NOT to set up preferences and just do a "What's New" on the entire site.
As I said, the creating of too many fora is overall, detrimental.
As for binoculars being related to photography and video - no it is not. Photography and video are essentially RECORDING devices that happen to use a combination of optical and other technologies. Binoculars are optical devices in isolation.
And what about telescopes then?
There was a thread on telescopes only the other day that was left (quite rightly) in The Lounge.
The new set up only encourages mod meddling, inconsistency and confusion.

My suggestion: Binoculars and telescopes are viewing devices. Cameras are viewing devices with a recording facility.Owzat?

Wise words! If you can get up to the £300 range then you will have a friend for life. I would love to have a really decent pair but the jump from £300 to £800 and above is too small unless you are a twitcher and it is your life.Simpo Two said:

And, as I said earlier, why the inconsistency with the Telescope questions?
Jessops sell video cameras, SLRs, compact digital cameras and binoculars. QED.
Anyway, on to the point at hand...

^^^ Agreed. My sis-in-law bought my brother a set for his birthday for LeMans, very good set indeed (I'll find the link to them)TonyHetherington said:

So where you buy things is now a determining factor as to where a topic ends up on PH. I'll bear that in mind - especially if I am in the market for a telescope.Anyway, on to the point at hand...
