A not well publicised event took place in Maidstone yesterday. The council were involved which probably helps explain the lack of knowledge of it to anyone whom you asked.

The first (and hopefully not the last) Maidstone Classic Transport show too place on the pedestrian precincts of the shopping centre of Maidstone. It would have covered more area and used another street but a plastic policemen decided that the permission we had from the council wasn't good enough to use one of the street.

Anyway - onto the images..

It's a rare chance to drive one of these through the pedestrian area..

Thunderbird

Can you guess what it is yet..

Now this old dear looked the part in her outfit - came along in a wicker basket side car with her husband. I recall she was 62 - and still actively involved in sidecar racing. She's on the sidecar, her husbands driving. Hat's off to her spirit.

I've desaturated these in an attempt to lose some of the distractions from the bright colours in the background.

Huge Cadillac..an almost daily driver.
The owner Ross also has a 1959 Ambulance which you'll know as the Ghostbusters Ecto 1 car.

The old brigade park up, take out their seats and then sit there all day.

Owned by the mother of the guy with the Cadillac

Strange Chevrolet.
The back loading bay just needed some decking on it and it would look like a boat

Some tidy British Classics - most of which were leaking oil into their oil trays.

Thunderbird, Mustang and Caddy.

All in all a cracking day out.

What a great idea for a show. How did the cars go down with Jo Public?

Cheers - it's mine...

The men seemed to appreciate it as it was a distraction from being dragged round the shops by their wives. "I'll just go an look at the cars dear, see you in a hour or so". Lots of women had an interest also - but definitely a male orientated base of interest. I guess the cars couldn't compete with the shops for womens interest though. biggrin

Lots of passerby's commenting on the cars, taking pictures etc - just a pity that Maidstone Council couldn't get their butts in gear to assist in promoting it - it was all done to bring people into the town.

If it's going to happen next year we'll need more space - some of the cars were a bit close to each other to walk round them.

There's quite a few of villages down Kent shut off the streets one day and have a car show - Hamstreet to name one - Faversham being another.

Maidstone looks very clean, is it always like that?

Also is it possible that the council were worried about a "green" backlash for supporting a carshow?

Something along the lines of
"why oh why oh why, when the worlds is about to explode ina ball of fire did the council allow hugely polluting vehicles into the precinct, and why do they feel the need to support this sort of un-ecologival behaviour"

So they kept it a bit low key to see what transpired.

Cracking shots though. Like the Mustang/caddy one especially.
