Slide to digital

My FIL has got about 170 slides that he wants to transfer to digital image. The going rate is about a quid a slid it seems. Are these slide copier attachments that fit on the front of a DSLR any good?

If not is there a better option?

Do you not have access to a scanner? The quality from an ordinary consumer scanner will not be as good as a commercial one designed especially for photographic film, but it may be good enough.
