I have this picture that took a while to get:

and was thinking it would look quite good in black and white, but keeping the lens part in colour.

How would i go about doing this and is there any tips you can give me?

Cheers.

Create a duplicate layer. Turn the duplicate to B&W. Create a layer mask and paint back in the bits you want in colour. 5 minute job.

Duplicate the background layer in Photoshop or whichever program you are using, then change the duplicate into black and white. Once you've done that use the eraser to remove the part you want in colour from the black and white layer, so that you can see through to the colour background picture.

There may be other ways to do it too, but that's how I would.

Edit: Beaten to it!

Whilst I start reading on how to do it with a guide for dummies, would it be rude of me to ask if you could have a quick go at it if its only a 5min change.

Once I get the background changed im going to read up and see if i can sharpen the outside up a bit as the picture was taking focusing solely on my glasses and not my ugly mug.

Anyone got any good links on a how to page of altering pictures and such?

Cheers

Using a mask is non destructive, and it's very easy to correct any mistakes. Paint in black on the mask to reveal the colour from the layer below, paint in white to conceal it, or to correct any mistakes.

Here's a quick 3 minute job.

The sad fact is, you have more talent and patience taking that pic in the first place, than is required to just mask an area and apply an effect in Photoshop.

Just use google and open up Photoshop and I think you will be surprised (and also realise that people who use Photoshop arent gods lol).
