So why is it that sensors can't cope with blue/mauve/violent colours very well?

You can all gang up on me if you like and tell me that the newer models all produce much better purples and I can go green with envy, meanwhile I am seeing red about having to be careful cooking up these in the Lightroom. Well, not really seeing red, just getting a bit jaundiced tweaking them all.

I use the Nikon profiles - landscape in this case - and I don't find I like it very much compared with the "portrait" settings for example, which I find really good. (Auto white balance by the way - maybe that's an issue?)

Raw, converted with "Landscape" gives me:

...and dragging back the bluebells to what it seemed like in the day was:

Anyone else struggle with their blues?

hmm- the blues in your first photo look over saturated. blue/ violet is at the edge of the visible spectrum, so i wouldnt be surprised if its a 'tricky' colour

with video cameras its always reds- especially red next to black. Everythings so compressed with video footage, and red and black are a nightmare when next to each other- its maximum luma & saturation, next to complete lack of luma and saturation. And it shows up the infomation lost in compression, and you get horrible aliasing

Can you elaborate on 'Nikon profiles' and where you are setting them? I assume these are RAW files?

Surely if you want accurate colours you'd be better leaving it on default.

Hi Simpo wavey Yes, I mean the Adobe Beta Camera Profiles that you can get to load in P-shop and Lightroom (I know you don't like LR, but this bit is generally a handy one for both Nik-Can users to stuff the similar profiles to the NX and Canon-own software).

So these were from a RAW file using Lightroom - in fact even if not applying a profile the blues are way up - the Lightroom saturation for the blue channel (and aqua) were both tamed back to minus 30-50 and the vibrancy knocked back a bit to to get something more natural. but it's a perennial problem especially for purple flowers whatever I choose to apply when converting.

wavey

Colour is a minefield - there are so many places in the chain where it can go wrong and I've just been lucky. If you bung it over I'll try it in C1 Pro and mail it back so you can see if it's any better.

If it isn't, the easy way out is to stick to red, yellow and white flowers!

ETA: I thought the D2X was so old it only shot black and white...
