I have two 400d's and fancy upgrading to a better body.

In the real world is there any difference between the two?

I think the main difference is the extra resolution, although some reports say that you need to use the best lenses to be able to make use of it. There are also a few other things like a better screen and built in vignetting correction. What do you want to change cameras for? What is it about your current cameras that you find limiting?

To be honest, possibly a bit of an impulse purchase.

I don't have a particular genre, but do tend to take more motorsport than say portrait. I have got some good expensive glass which will help with the 50D and having had a play the speed of focusing, shutter speed, ISO etc all seem to be light years ahead of the 400D.

I'd say get neither (and I have a 40D). Keep one 400D, and get a 5D or 5Dii.

You'll get the best of both worlds in terms of sensor size and image quality that way.

5D isn't exactly ideal for motorsport though is it?

But perhaps not the things that BtB lists as his observed benefits of either body over the 400D. For motor sport shots for example. Paddock shots, yes, but on track action ... I suspect the 40D/50D is a better way to go right now.

As far as the original question goes - no idea. Have wondered the same myself. The 50D seems not to have sold to well by some accounts. But then the 40D is getting a bit old in DSLR terms. Now I have a fairly long (70-300 DO) lens with AF i have discovered I can's get a full sequence of car spinning shots on the 400D shooting RAW before the buffer fills. So what I might look for is a camera that will give about 4 to 5 secs of images before filling its buffer when shooting RAW. Anything around the 10Mp sensor size, perhaps a bit less for a Pro body, would be fine. Probably.

40D is an excelent camera and should be the 1st chouce unless you want any or all of these from the 50D:

15mp (marginal)
Better LCD (good)
AF micro adjust (good)

Theres not masses uf 'up side' going for the 50D but if the price ends up not being much higher (not likely) it could be worth it. Else its not.

Well, ever the one to do what I want rather than take good advice I have bought a 50D.

Looks like as a camera it's not a great deal different to a 40D, but it was only £200 more so I thought....sod it. I'm happy with the purchase and will use it in anger at the Spanish F1 GP weekend after next biggrin

Now, anybody fancy buying a 400D + lens + couple of batteries off me wink

Waits to be shot down in flames......... wink

At the end of the day, I'm sure its a bloody fantastic camera. And as long as you're happy with your purchase, thats all that mattersthumbup
I did take the precaution of buying a few spare whistle I'll also probably buy a grip at some stage in the near future to make sure I have battery power when required.

I've got a grip on my 40D, it makes it a big old lump, but its really useful, especially for portrait shots when you want to turn the camera 90 degreesthumbup
Agreed on the size, which is why a couple of spare batteries stay in my bag...yes I may miss a couple of shots whilst changing batteries, but I don't need the extra weight in my hands!

Portrait...yeah, can buy that as well...if you're doing lots of portrait shots it's probably worthwhile.

I have a 40D and tried a mate's 50D yesterday - the biggest thing that struck me is that the screen on the 50D is **massively** superior to the 40.

So why bother asking for advice in the first place? scratchchin

In truth, both cameras are very good, and I'm sure you wouldn't have regretted either. As a 40D owner myself, I'll be interested to see how you get on with the 50.

My 50D is quite capable of being switched on in the morning, left on all day, take 300-400 shots with a 100-400 lens and last the day on one battery charge. I carry a spare battery just in case but I've never needed it.
