Hi all. Can someone please educate me on the best memory card to buy, as there are dozens of different manufacturers all varying greatly in price?

Many thanks

What type of memory card are you looking at? SD card? Compactflash (or CF), or Sony memory stick ?

Memory cards come in different sizes, and different speeds, which all effect price. Also, some companys are rip offs! A lot of cards can come from the same factorys in china, yet some companys will stick their brand on them, and mark up the price

I would stay with a reputable brand like Lexar or Sandisk. (Note that 90% of all 'Sandisks' sold on eBay are fake). Memory is so cheap now that it's worth a few £ extra IMHO.

It's all about speed (as well as a decent manufacturer - i.e. Sandisk). Buy a fast card and it will let you take photos in a 'burst' and they will get written to the card swiftly, letting you take more photos sooner. (Not that important for landscapes!)

However, the camera needs to be up to the speed of the card. Chuck a Sandisk Ultra 111 into a D50 and the write speed won't be any quicker than a bog standard cheapo jobbie.

I use pixmania.com. Good service.

Sorry its compact flash I’m looking for on a 350D.

So the more you spend the faster the write speed, thanks. A good percentage of my pics are landscapes so will try a Lexar as currently have a Sandisk to see if any different.

Many thanks for the speedy responses guys. smile

we've used http://www.mymemory.co.uk/ beofre at work- we found them through amazon, then found theyre much cheaper through their own website!

the Kingston CF cards are pretty good value on there, and Ive been caining a 16gig 133x speed one for months and months now, in a video camera, and its proved reliable.

the 32 gig didnt work out as good value as two 16

Anything faster than 133x speed can get quite pricey, but it depends on what type of shooting you do if you need faster

The 350D cant actualy write to a mem card all that fast realy, just stick to the sandisk extreem II or something spending $$$ on super fast ones wont make it go any quicker (unless you plan to upgrade the body soon).

Ta Rob, a bit of method in the madness with asking the question. I do intend to upgrade the camera later in the year, just a few more curves to learn yet. I’ve a holiday coming up and need more memory for now, but will come in handy for the future to.

Same here, six of them and all 100% reliable. Worth the usual comment about not going overboard capacity wise, stick to something that will hold a max of about 150-200 shots on your camera. That way if you have a card corrupt, or drop one (like I do all the time!) you won't loose a whole holidays worth. Maybe 2 or 4gb max on todays 10mp DSLRs.

So if your planing to jump to the 5DmkII or even 50D dont bother with 2 or 4 gig cards, go for 8.

Very true about the sellers being more expensive on Amazon. It's obviously because theres a charge that has to be accounted for if they sell on Amazon, but if you get the product direct on thier site, you can get it cheaper, like I did with this seller: http://www.gomemory.co.uk
