Just was trying some shutter dragging for a look I was after tonight, only to find that canon do not appear to support 2nd curtain flash sync on the 5dmk2. Having read on the net it appears you can only do it if you buy a 580exII - madness. I want to use the feature in studio with off camera flash. My 350d supprted it, my 5d supported it - has anyone got 2nd curtain flash working on their 5dMK2?

Can't you enable it in the Menu/External Speedlite Control/Flash Function Settings/Shutter Sync/2nd Curtain? (and also via your Speedlite?) I don't have the camera but I'd be very surprised if you could only enable it with 580EXII. confused

The external speedlite controls on the 5d mk2 simply interface with the 580EX's (or other speedlite) controls and allow you to set the flash from the camera. This saves you having to mess with the camera settings on the camera controls - then the flash settings on the flash controls.

Second curtain sync is a flash gun option, not a camera option - therefore you have to buy a flash gun that is second curtain sync enabled.

Both the 580EX and the 430EX flash guns are second curtain sync enabled.

So you need a speedlite connected to drag the shutter when using studio strobes? confused

Cheers.

well on the 5dmk2 you need a speedlight to access the flash control panel, on the 5dmk1 you could hard set it. On the mk1 it did not trigger my IR flash on the 2nd curtain so will give it a try with a wired connection...

I'm guessing what actually happens is the camera tells the flash its about to release rather than sending a 2nd pulse
