Photo editing with a MacBook
Discussion
I'm looking at getting a cheapish laptop for basic surfing and skpye but am realling enjoying playing with my EOS 40D and the next step seems to be editing the photos in photoshop etc.
Whilst a 300 quid laptop from PCWorld would probably do, does anyone here use the bottom of the range 2.0Ghz MacBook?
Travelling to Sydney tomorrow so I could get it for 625.

Credit crunch prevents a 2k macbook pro and, unfortunately, I've had to give up on ebay and gumtree as they seem to be full of fops, idlers and scammers.
Any advice gratefully received!

I use a year old macbook (the white one) but thats purely down to the fact that I dont like Windows, and TBH for the money you could get a much better spec Windows laptop in comparison, and the whole thing about Macs being better for photo editing is no longer true either as both Macs and Pcs now essentially run on the same hardware.
All I'm saying is, don't buy a Mac for the sake of it, unless it's what you really want it probably isn't worth it.

I think the Macbook is well worth the extra, they hardly ever go wrong, dont get slower with age and suit photoshop very well, professional DTP and media houses dont use them for no reason.
MacBook Pro 17 here plus imac 24, pictures look stunning when compared to the viewing on other newish laptops I have around.
Have always had PCs but once you've had a Mac I dont think you'd go back
This is bound to start Mac v PC war

yeah i got one for when i'm out on location.
in my experience it has enough processing power BUT laptop screens in general aren't the best for photo editing though. might be better with an imac?
Great thanks. I suppose I could always get a monitor for at home. Dissappointed to see there does seem to be much support for HD, otherwise I could have used my plasma. You pays ya money and takes ya choice...in my experience it has enough processing power BUT laptop screens in general aren't the best for photo editing though. might be better with an imac?
Do you mind me asking what software do you use?

Yeah i didn't want to start another one of those threads...I've spent most of the day wading through them on the computing forum!! :-)MacBook Pro 17 here plus imac 24, pictures look stunning when compared to the viewing on other newish laptops I have around.

I think there's definitely a premium for the "name" but at the same time they seem to command a premium second hand (unlike my car...)
I think I'll see how I feel at Heathrow tomorrow...

illustrator,
photoshop.
go for it, pc's are rubbish!
1gb of ram is not enough for photo editing but it is so easy and cheap to upgrade:

But go for it, had my macbook and has not gone wrong once in over 1.5 years.

Lightroom, Illustrator and Photoshop all work on a PC too illustrator,

However, personally I wouldn't want to edit photos seriously on any laptop because I lke to work keyboard and mouse together and use two screens - it's ergonomics rather than processing power.
