Good compact (ixus 65 sized but newer/better?) £200 - £250
Discussion
After a good new compact, my old ixus 300 died.
Just something for having for half decent snaps when I don't drag the SLR around. I like Canons, and like the Ixus 65 a friend has, but wasn't sure what the best current equivalents are...?!
Any advice much appreciated as to what will fit my needs best (which are as SLR as you can get, both my partner and I are into our photography a bit, just it needs to be a compact proper (ie, stuff in pocket kickaround size))
Thanks in advance
Dave

The Fuji Finepix Fxxfd range are great cameras - have manual modes and critically a larger sensor than normal compacts so have less noise (better for low light) than nearly every other compact.
There's a new Fuji out soon (can't remember the name) that will quite simply blow everything else out of the water.

Ooo sounds worth waiting for maybe.I did have a good look into the Fuji when I was looking about 4 months ago, but I never really looked further into it.
Those IXUS from eBay look ok value. The range just seems so large though, I can't actually get my head around the compact marketing/product line like I can with the SLR's...
Looks like I might have to lose a few days of my life researching what I need

the Ixus 980IS won the AP Gear of the Year award for best compact if that helps...
Is that the £249 one on Jessops.I think that is the 'top end' one with a 3x optical zoom isn't it, available in pink, silver and blue...
Looked quite well specced/rated, and is just in budget for our compact.
Hmmm

Hrmmm, at that price I might be best waiting for the Fuji one, as it does seem a generational leap forward. Just hope it's under the £300 level otherwise it's getting a bit silly for a small compact (for me anyway)

I haven't looked to see what the Fuji will offer but for a compact it really depends whether you're looking for something almost like an SLR in quality and functionality (except lens changing!) or just something to take pictures with when you can't be bothered to carry around the SLR. To be honest, our 'ancient' Ixus 400 still takes cracking shots for the size of image we'd use it for and I bought a second hand G7 for when I want slightly more than the Ixus will offer. Would I spend £250-300 on a compact? - simple answer, no. But that's me Dave
