For 1st time set my 400D to take large JPG plus RAW photos.
Copying the photos over via USB cable, I get is 2 x JPGs of each snap. What am I doing wrong?

I can't tell you what you're doing wrong, but I'd recommend you get a card reader rather than using a USB cable to the camera. It's a quicker way of transferring the files (and RAW files are big), and doesn't make any demand on the actual camera.

Have you tried setting it to just take RAW to see what happens then?

I can only think that if you are using a program to do the transfer (rather than a simple cut and paste), that it's set to convert raw to JPEG automatically.

Probably a daft suggestion, but are you sure they're both jpegs ?

Open them both up in PS or elements and see if adobe camera raw kicks in with either of them.

Obviously if the file name is .jpeg for both, then I'm a numpty, but for some reason, my laptop shows thumbnails of raw files and sometimes it doesn't.

If your in an auto mode (sports/landscape etc) it'll just produce jpg whatever you've set.

A plug-in for Windows Explorer that allows the display of thumbnails for CAnon RAW files is available from the Canon web-site.

Nice suggestion. I get a CR2 file of about 10MB, which works perfectly in Photoshop

Is that what's on the CF card or does it only become a JPEG once it's transferred to your hard disk?

Not sure. My initial thought, as per my earlier post, is that if you are using software to do the transfer that it's set to convert to JPEG automatically. The fact that if you shoot raw only you don't get the same problem probably rules out that theory though. I'm afraid I don't have any other ideas. At least you know the camera is actually recording the raw files.
