Canon 450D Help
Discussion
OK, as some of you may have seen, I've just bought a Canon 450D and am a bit stuck on something.
According to the manual you can only view the image you are trying to take on the LCD screen if the dial is set between P and A-Dep, which seems really odd that you can't use it on anfully auto mode.
Anyway, assuming that there is nothing to be done about that, when it is on P, Tv, Av, M or A-Dep and we look at the subject on the LCD screen it won't auto-focus. It's definitely turned on, on the lens, but we can't find out why
Any help gratefully received!!
Thanks

Hi,
Afraid I don't have a 450D, but a few suggestions...
On this page -
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos450d/page1...
..it mentions that the 450D has 2 methods of autofocus when using live view (it can't do the 'normal' SLR autofocus as the mirror is locked up). 1st method is to flip down the mirror, autofocus, then flip the mirror back up. The 2nd is to use a contrast-based autofocus system on the image the sensor creates.
This 2nd system would allow you to autofocus with no interruption in the picture on the screen.
You can enable this 2nd system as the default autofocus system via this custom function-

Perhaps this is the reason?
[edit]Full details of autofocusing with liveview are on page 102 of your manual[/edit]
Cheers.

Thanks guys, this is the problem, but I couldn't find this screen in the manual.http://a.img-dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos450d/ima...
Kermit - If you have tha dial set on 'P' for example, press menu and find the Custom (C.Fn) screen and then number 8 as in the picture above and you can pick either option.
Then back to take the picture, press 'set' to switch the screen on and hold the * button to focus. On Live Mode it will re-focus whilst showing the screen fairly slowly, on Quick Mode it cuts the display whilst AF does it's work, then beeps - release the * button and it's in focus.
You also need to set the AF Focus point to a single point rather than the normal 9-point and AF to Single Shot (which is the default setting)
All seems a bit of an effort - but that probably because I'm a heathen and have got used to compacts!
Thanks for the help
