If you are on a PC you have Windows Movie Maker on your hard disk. It'll do 99% of what you want and is piss easy to use.

+1 , thought it is quite cumbersome to use if you're chopping clips around etc. Very good for basic editing if all your source material is the same size (resolution) though.

Microsoft also do a Windows Media extension tool (can't remember what it's called though!), that is great for converting all kinds of formats to windows media player file formats (.wmv / .wma etc). Will also resize and compress as required. I used it recently for hacking some kpeg4 files ripped of a DVD for a promo video.

If Windows Movie Maker is not for you, try Pinnacle Studio.

Sony Vegas Pro 8 is very good, but I think any video editing software takes a while to get to know. It's about £400 but you can download a 30 day free trial, or I've heard that the torrent websites like Vuze.com have copies on there.

If you try a retailer such as PlanetPC (www.planetdv.net), who will probably have some second hand, or older versions of software such as Adobe Premiere Pro.
